Implants are NOT teeth, let me explain…

Dental implants can not survive without sufficient bone and biology within the patients mouth. Teeth can survive and even thrive with as little as a 1/4 or a 1/2mm of bone present on the buccal or facial plate; an implant generally will not. It is imperative to plan the proper bone and biology to surround your implants.

This patient was referred to me in pain and with what seemed to be a failing implant. Once a flap was made and the implant removed you can see the markings from where the implant threads were and how little bone was present. A large facial concavity limited the bone in this area where many may think there was plenty. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) was performed to achieve the proper bone and biology that was needed for long term implant health and success. CGF/PRF protocols were used with mineralized cortical particulate and a resorbable collagen membrane was used to give us the proper barrier membrane needed to allow the hard tissue cells to form without soft tissue cell interference.

The new dental implant was placed after 5 months of healing and as you can see we have tons of bone all around our implant and no bony buccal/facial undercuts are present.
