Hi guys,I’m new on implant dentistry.I’ll ask about full mouth cases.I just wonder if we are able to place 4-6 implants so why would we still go overdenture instead of fixed.I know it makes prosthesis more stable but it is still removable? (Photo from Ivan’s Overdenture Cookbook :))

      • Hi Berat! Great question. You’re asking, if we can place 4-6 implants and do a bar on it—why wouldn’t we simply do fixed?

Fixed vs removable full arch is a great topic.

Removable is a great option if:

        – patient has a very high smile line and shows gums.

        – patient has a big “composite defect” basically meaning that they have had a lot of resorption and the prosthesis will be replacing a big portion of gums as well as the teeth.

        – if patient might not be able to clean very well around the prosthesis.

In those situations, I tend to choose removable. A bar is used if the patient does not have much residual ridge left for the denture to grab onto. This helps stabilize the denture and connect the implants rigidly thereby adding a layer of protection from the forces placed on the implants.
