Has anyone had experience placing implants on a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease? Pt is in need of 2 implants but given the disease are there additional precautions needed?

Hello Khurrum, super interesting question here.
I have never personally dealt with a patient with this condition.
My understanding is that it is primarily the nervous system.
My main concerns regarding implants would be:
– not doing full arch fixed as patients would not be able to keep this clean.
– evaluating the local quality of bone at the proposed implant sites. Also evaluating is this patient has any osteoporosis-like presentation.
– implementing a 3 month recall initially to monitor hygiene.
– consider who is doing the home care. Is it a nurse? Get patient a water pik.
– assess safety of doing the procedure in the office—to evaluate if patient is able to tolerate the procedure in your setting.
– double check medications to make sure none of them are the “red flag” medications for implants.
If the patient is healthy otherwise, and can tolerate the procedure, and I think they would benefit from it, I would likely move forward.

@ivan-chicchon wow thank you. it may be beneficial, unless I missed it, if we have a retrievable post or article on contra-indications with implants. For example the medication Methotrexate which can delay osteointegration.
