While not ideal, my understanding is we can get closer to adjacent teeth at the apex than at the crest of the bone.

Ext #30 and 31. Mega defect left behind. Grafted with 2.0cc of particulate allograft, covered with 20x30mm collagen membrane (3-4 month resorption time) tucked under buccal and lingual really well. Sutured it up with nearly complete primary closure.
